A Specialist in Maritime Law, Gerardo Ponce holds extensive expertise in negotiation and dispute-related matters as well as mediation processes in representation of shipowners, cargo interest, port operators, P&I Clubs, insurers, reinsurers and other maritime and shipping industry actors.
For seventeen years now, Gerardo has represented and counseled a wide range of domestic and international companies in the maritime and shipping business: these include insurers, P&I Clubs, shipowners, operators, cargo owner or consignees and investors. His range of expertise has been focused on legal or arbitration proceedings related to maritime and commercial claims, including losses or damages of vessels or cargo, as well as arrest of ships decided by Venezuelan authorities.
Furthermore, he has been working as a Substitute Maritime Superior Judge in Caracas and since 2012 as a permanent consultant in Venezuela to the United Nations Conference on Trade and Development (UNCTAD).
Gerardo holds a law degree from Santa María University in Caracas, Venezuela (1997). Additionally, he pursued a Master of Law in International Maritime Trade from Universidad Marítima del Caribe in 2002, and hods as well a Magister Degree in Maritime Transport, Safety of Maritime Transport from UMC as well.
Contribution to the maritime sector
Gerardo Ponce has been lecturer of Marine Risks at Universidad Marítima del Caribe for more than ten years now. He is a member of both the American Institute of Maritime Law (IIDM) and the Venezuelan Maritime Law Association (AVDM). Among his contributions to the maritime sector, he has been invited as speaker at both domestic and international sector-related events, where he has had the opportunity to present, analyze and discuss different topics, such as the Laws of Maritime Commerce, Maritime Procedures and Maritime Business. He is fluent in Spanish and English.
