Founding Member at SOV Consultores – Maritime Specialist
A Maritime and Commercial Law Specialist and founding member of SOV Consultores, José Manuel Vilar has been practising since 2007 in negotiation and disputes matters, representing shipowners, cargo interest, port operators, P&I Clubs, insurers, reinsurers and investors. Furthermore, he has committed his professional practise to the dissemination of maritime law & business in his home country, Venezuela.
Among others, Jose Manuel’s practise covers legal representation to owners, port operators, P&I Clubs, insurers, and reinsurers in claims arising out of trials, arbitrations processes. It also includes counseling in negotiation matters arising out of maritime contracts such as charterparties, sale of goods and offshore operation contracts for the development and production of crude oil.
Jose Manuel’s academic background includes law degree from Universidad Católica Andrés Bello (2004). Furthermore, he holds a Master of Law in International Maritime Trade from Universidad Marítima del Caribe (UMC, 2007) and a Master of Law in Maritime Business from Universidad Pontificia Comillas of Madrid (2011). Additionally, he earned a Certificate in Maritime Disputes and Arbitration from Lloyd´s Academy Institute (2019). He is a native Spanish speaker and fluent in English.
Contributions to the maritime sector
Along with his professional practise, Jose Manuel has been a Lecturer of Administrative Maritime Law at Universidad Marítima del Caribe for over eight years and a Substitute Lecturer of Hull Maritime Insurance at Universidad Central de Venezuela. He is a member of both the Venezuelan Maritime Law Association (AVDM) and the Ibero-American Institute of Maritime Law (IIDM). Among other contributions to the dissemination of maritime law and business in Venezuela, he has participated as speaker on various topic-related events and a number of written articles are also among his individual publications. Besides his professional duties, he devotes time to music and sports.
